Inside a million-square-foot Midtown office tower, renovations are moving forward while business continues uninterrupted. Union contractors and carpenters with the New York City District Council of Carpenters are performing interior renovation work at 520 Madison Avenue, the 43-story tower that serves as the global headquarters of Jefferies Financial Group.

The work spans multiple floors, with union crews performing interior commercial work, floor covering, finish woodwork, furniture installation, and architectural metal and glass work. The renovation also includes an elevator lobby and window treatments throughout the space.

Much of the work is being performed on weekends and outside regular business hours, allowing trading floors and offices to remain operational during the week. Modernizing a medical campus doesn’t mean putting patient care on pause. Union contractors and carpenters with the New York City District Council of Carpenters are performing renovation and build-out work at NYU Langone Health’s medical campus at 333 East 38th Street in Murray Hill. The facility is home to the NYU Langone Orthopedic Center, Outpatient Surgery Center, and ambulatory care services for the Perlmutter Cancer Center, Rusk Rehabilitation, and Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital.

One of New York’s most storied hotels is getting ready for its next chapter. The historic Gramercy Park Hotel at 2 Lexington Avenue is undergoing a major restoration, with union contractors and carpenters with the New York City District Council of Carpenters performing interior work throughout the 18-story property.

First opened in 1925, the hotel includes 197 guestrooms and suites. Union crews are installing floor coverings, acoustical ceilings and interior systems across multiple floors as the century-old property is restored and modernized.

From guest rooms to common areas, the work taking place throughout the building is part of a larger transformation that will bring the Gramercy Park Hotel back to life while preserving its place in one of Manhattan’s most distinctive neighborhoods.

A new affordable senior community is taking shape on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Union contractors and carpenters with the New York City District Council of Carpenters are building Ridge Street Apartments at 145 Broome Street, a 16-story development that will bring 190 affordable homes to New Yorkers age 62 and older, including apartments reserved for formerly homeless seniors.

Construction is moving steadily upward, with the reinforced concrete superstructure now past the halfway point. On a tight site behind St. Mary’s Church, union crews are performing the concrete, formwork and carpentry bringing the building closer to completion.

Designed to achieve Passive House certification, Ridge Street Apartments will provide energy-efficient, affordable homes while adding much-needed senior housing to the Lower East Side. For more than 133 years, the Park Avenue Viaduct has carried nearly every Metro-North train in and out of Grand Central Terminal. Union contractors and carpenters with the New York City District Council of Carpenters rebuilt major sections of the viaduct as part of a project completed five years ahead of schedule and $195 million under budget.

The work included foundation and ground work and heavy bridge structure replacement. Working within brief 48 hour weekend windows while trains continued operating on neighboring tracks, the project team replaced 196 bridge structures using prefabricated bridge units weighing nearly 190,000 pounds each, while rebuilding more than 12,600 feet of railroad infrastructure over just 28 weekends.

A new federal workplace is taking shape in the heart of Midtown Manhattan. Construction is advancing on one of Lower Manhattan’s most significant resiliency infrastructure projects. Union contractors and carpenters with the New York City District Council of Carpenters are building the South Battery Park City Resiliency Project, a $231 million flood protection system designed to safeguard Lower Manhattan from storm surge and rising sea levels as part of the broader Lower Manhattan Coastal Resiliency initiative.

The first sections of reinforced concrete flood walls have now been formed and are being clad in stone between Pier A and Battery Place near the intersection of Broadway and State Street. The project will create a continuous protective barrier extending from the Museum of Jewish Heritage through Wagner Park and across Pier A Plaza. Construction is also progressing on South Cove and the South Esplanade as work advances into the next phases.
