Harlem’s New Public Health Lab: Advancing Medical Care & Community Health

A groundbreaking medical resource for Harlem and NYC residents is coming to 40 West 137th Street by 2026. The NYC Public Health Laboratory will be adjacent to Harlem Hospital and is being built by union contractors and carpenters with the New York City District Council of Carpenters. The safety precautions of union contractors and carpenters are always critical, but this is especially true in medical construction. The Public Health Lab will offer many benefits to the community including a wide array of testing and monitoring services for multiple clinical and environmental health concerns. The 240,000-square-foot ten-story building will also be home to teaching medical specialties. It will have a 200-person auditorium and diagonal laboratory glass tower extending south as the building ascends to facilitate larger laboratory sizes. The medical work that will be conducted here and the beautiful design of this building emphasize the importance of the deep knowledge and safety precautions that union carpenters and contractors provide.
